"Golf Cart Batteries" are heavier duty batteries than those commonly referred to as deep cycle batteries. Internal differences are in formulation of lead and lead plate thickness. Deep cycle batteries are also used as starting batteries, to get the extra surge of amps for starting the deep cycle batteries use more and thinner battery plates, to maintain plate strength against physical bumps and vibration the plates are formulated with hardening compounds. For off grid applications thinner plates are something to avoid. Batteries named Pacer, T605, T105, T125,T875 and T890 are frequently referred to as golf cart batteries. Off-grid systems require as heavy a battery plate as possible. The lead plates for an off grid battery use different and usually purer lead compounds as they are purpose built for the type of use they are put to. There are many storage energy alternatives available on the market. Avoid batteries built for other applications. The batteries of choice for alternative energy on the table about are the L16 series batteries shown in two areas on the chart above. Battery Sizing Considerations:Total Capacity is the battery's capacity to 100% depth of discharge, example if you require 500 AH to 50% D.O.D. the total Capacity required is 1000 AH. A battery will last 300% longer if the DOD is no greater than 20%. Therefore if you require 500 AH and want to keep DOD to 20% you will require a total capacity of 5000 AH. Battery capacity is measured at 250C (770F) if your batteries are stored in a cold environment (e.g. outside temperatures in winter) battery capacity is diminished by temperature.
